I have long been a fan of Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Underworld series. Armstrong's strength lies in her ability to create amazing visuals of her urban fantasy world. She also has strong female characters, an interesting premise in that the protagonist changes with each book featuring a different supernatural woman. That said, not all of her books are created equal and this one fell flat for me.

This is my second time reading this book (I'm re-reading the entire series slowly) so going in all I remembered was that this book featured werewolves Clay and Elena -- my favs. Unfortunately the plot wasn't as riveting as I was hoping for.

What the book did have going for it was that it was set in Toronto. I love it when I can picture locations in a book because I've walked those streets myself. I also love it when Canadian authors write about Canadian locales and not automatically make a book set in the U.S 'just cuz'. It's a pet peeve of this Canuck reader.

One of the big issues I had with this book is that it focused too much on Elena's pregnancy. I suppose this was to be expected but, quite frankly, I didn't find it all that interesting. As someone who has been in the pregnancy trenches three times it was hard to believe that a woman who is at the end of her final trimester, even though she's a werewolf, could do all of the things Elena did. She couldn't tie her shoe but she could kick zombie butt? Ummm, ok. And the reason why she continued to keep putting herself and her pregnancy in danger (because she was bored) didn't ring true for me. During this pregnancy-fest Clay and Jeremy lost quite a bit of their toughness as they took on the roles of worrying mother hens due to her 'condition'. Don't get me wrong, I liked that Elena and Clay's relationship is taking on new ground but would have much preferred for it to be in the background with more focus on the mystery plot.

The mystery ... hmmm. I wasn't a fan of the zombies and Jack the Ripper/time portal plot line. It was weak at best and not described in enough detail for this reader be interesting. I did enjoy seeing the Pack back in action as well as the addition of Torontonian vampire, Zoe (who I hope makes more appearances in future books). She added some energy to the plodding plot.

Overall, this wasn't a bad read but it definitely wasn't one of the stronger books in the series either. I loved that it was set in a Canadian locale and progressed the personal aspects of Clay and Elena but unfortunately I found the general plot lacking.

Broken Kelley Armstrong 9780553588187 Books Reviews

Upgrade to 3.5. I listened to this on CD. Good story. Elena is pregnant and to her mates distress takes on the job of retrieving a stolen letter which was supposedly written by Jack the Ripper. Zombie's emerge from a time warp to complicate matters.
This review is of the book itself since none of the reviews I read seemed to describe the actual *book*. I ordered the Mass Market Paperback and the cover is indeed the red flower with the black background like I'd hoped. Wasn't sure which one I would get since the sizing picture had the old cover, but overall happy. The book didn't really come packaged at all with bubble wrap or anything so it was dented a few places in shipping, but it can't come perfect I guess. I'm excited to read it.
It's been a while since I've read the Otherworld series, and I'm finding myself a bit at odds.

I love (love, LOVE) the characters and their relationships/interactions. About 50% of the time I also love the plot. The other 50% of the time . . . not so much. Saying that I find (some of) them to be over-told or tired seems too strong, but it's also kind of the truth. I called Stolen the best retelling of The Most Dangerous Game that I'd come across. And that's true. But did I like The Most Dangerous Game the first time I read it? No. And now with Broken. Do I like variations on Jack the Ripper? NOPE. He was a gruesome serial killer who murdered prostitutes and cut up their faces. What's to like?

And why do children always seem to be the targets? People die in books. I have no problem with that. I don't like it, but I accept it. But that doesn't mean you need to target kids. It just doesn't.

So even though I love Clay and Elena, and even though I think it's hilarious to see Jamie so flustered by Jeremy, did I really enjoy Broken? Sadly, no.
Once again, Kelley Armstrong has returned to Elena for another great story. I say great due to the fact of Elena's pregnancy and how she deals with it, not the crazy story and plot. I found the Jack the Ripper and the From Hell letter a little too bizarre to really enjoy. However, I did appreciate Elena's continuing struggle on being the only female werewolf.

Besides being the only female werewolf, Elena now has to contend with being the only female and pregnant werewolf. Ms. Armstrong describes Elena's fears and insecurities with great effect. Elena hasn't a difficult time reconciling her dual natures, wolf and human. She constantly fears that her wolf will hurt her unborn child. At times, she refuses to Change based on that fear. Due to Ms. Armstrong's intense storytelling, I found that I could truly empathize with Elena's struggles.

Because she is the first pregnant female werewolf, the male werewolves in her pack are extremely protective. Clayton and Jeremy are constantly watching her every move. At times, she feels very claustrophobic with all the added attention. You think human men are protective of their pregnant wives/girlfriends, try being married to a werewolf.

Another aspect of the book I really enjoyed were how Elena and Clayton's feelings toward parenthood conflicted with each other. Elena is very uptight on whether she will make a good mother while Clayton seems to be more comfortable with the parenting concept. I think that comes from Clayton being more wolf than human in his instincts and values while Elena still tries to embrace her full humanity.

An additional tidbit I really liked from this book is Jaime Vegas' crush on Jeremy. It is a great lead-in to the next book, No Humans Involved.

As you probably can tell, I didn't talk about the overall plot. Mainly, because I thought the most important of the book was Elena's journey through her pregnancy and her acceptance of who she is. The ending was very touching with Paige making a small appearance. Kelley Armstrong can weave a great, emotional story.

Rating 3 ½ out of 5 Stars (due to the funky plot)
