It makes me sad to be writing this review simply because this book is the last chapter of one of my favorite series. I can’t help but feel emotional having gone through the numerous ups and downs of life with the beloved Marked Men and their women. In many ways I think Jay Crownover saved her best for last with Asa and Royal’s story. From the moment Asa was introduced I had my fingers crossed that he would get his turn, and I was ecstatic when I found out he was being paired with Royal. Crownover delivered the perfect conclusion, a sexy and heartfelt story about trust, forgiveness, redemption, and the power of family and friendship.

The beauty of this story was of course the unlikely pairing of the Southern charmer and ex-criminal Asa and the gorgeous and feisty cop Royal. Asa was feeling some intense guilty and self-loathing because of the sins of his past. He lived a selfish and dangerous life before a near-death experience made him want to change his ways. The new Asa lived simply, believing that he was not worthy of happiness or anything else good. What tugged at my heartstrings most was his regret over how his actions had affected Ayden. Asa’s remorse was palpable, and I truly believed that he would have done anything to make amends with her.

Royal was no stranger to guilt and safe-blame herself after her partner and close friend was wounded in a shooting that left another officer dead. She was looking to drown her sorrows in alcohol and Asa. Unfortunately for Royal, Asa was not about to accept her attempts at throwing herself at him now that he had turned over a new leaf. I’m sure if I were in Royal’s shoes I would have felt the same way about what had happened. While I was saddened to see how Asa tortured himself regarding his past, I was glad that it helped Royal overcome her self-condemnation and doubts about her job. I loved her heart and the way she saw the goodness in Asa.

The chemistry between Asa and Royal was definitely off the charts. Both had serious sex appeal, especially Asa who could have charmed the pants off just about anyone. While I appreciated that he thought he was doing the right thing by staying away from her, it was fun to watch when he finally gave into the beautiful and confident woman. They were a well-matched couple. I admired Royal’s persistence in showing Asa that the past was just that and he needed to forgive himself in order to move on with his life. As for Asa, he stole my heart when I saw his relationships with Rome and Ayden, not to mention his desire to protect Royal from getting hurt.

Honestly, the best part of Marked Men series for me has always been the dynamics between all of the different characters. I love that at the end of the day they are one big family and who all care of each other. My heart warmed watching how they accepted Asa and Royal into the fold. It was wonderful getting a glimpse of every couple in this book and see them living their happily ever afters. While my heart feels heavy knowing that this series is finished, Crownover certainly ended it on a high note. I can’t wait for her new Saints of Denver series, and I look forward to the legacy of the Marked Men living on through those characters.

I put this book off as long as possible (even though I was dying to read it) because I didn't want this series to actually be over. I didn't want to say goodbye, even though there's the Saints of Denver series, which is a spin-off of the Marked Men. But alas, I finally gave in and read Asa's story, and I'll admit, it made me tear up a bit when I was finished reading. While Asa's story was my favorite out of the entirety of the series, it still was an amazing read and a fantastic way to end this series. However, the biggest thing I want to mention is Jay's writing. I have always thought Jay was an amazing writer, but you can see a remarkable progression to her writing throughout this entire series, and this book is the epitome of perfect writing. Jay truly blew me away with this novel, and I can't thank her enough for a better ending that Asa's story. The series felt complete after reading this novel, and I'm glad Asa's story was saved for last.

I was very intrigued by Asa's story, and was interested to see where Jay would take the plot in regards to his character. The thing I liked the most about his character was that he has fully accepted his past, and he still isn't fully "redeemed" when he and Royal got together. Asa has a lot of demons that he has to deal with, and by the end, he began to realize that those demons can remain in the past, and don't have to define his future. Royal, along with the other characters that have become his family, helped him realize this throughout the story, and it felt like a very natural progression. Even though this book is the end of Asa's story, it is only the beginning for his character and his character's future. And that future is looking might bright!

Royal was the perfect balance to Asa's dark nature. She grew a lot over the course of the novel, and I think that the majority of that was due to both her job (and the circumstances surrounding her job during the story) along with her relationship with Asa. Asa helped her realize things about herself that she didn't know before, and it allowed her to grow into a stronger person. Throughout the story, Royal has such a caring, compassionate spirit and nature, and that helps Asa realize things about himself as well. As I said, together Royal and Asa balanced each other out, and helped each other in ways that neither could have imagined at the beginning of their relationship. They have a very steamy relationship, and I loved every second of it!

The epilogue was perfect, and while I never wanted it to end, I was incredibly happy with how this series ended! This is a must read for all fans of this series, and I can't wait to check out the Saints of Denver series. While it is sad to say goodbye, the Marked Men series is one I will return to repeatedly (heck, I already have haha), and will always have a special place in my heart!

The Marked Men series is one of my favorites and ASA provides a nice finale!

I was very excited to read about yummy, bad boy Asa and all his sexy southern charm, but I was a little disappointed in him. I really didn't like the fact that Royal had to do all, ALL the chasing...I mean, how many times was she gonna throw herself at him, be the one to contact him, fight for him? I like my men fighting for their women, not continually pushing them away "for their own good". Asa was just too good, too guilt ridden, too self-deprecating. He has definitely reformed his bad boy ways and sadly that made him kinda boring.
Unfortunately the first 1/4 of the story was a bit lackluster and I just wasn't seeing the spark/chemistry between Asa & Royal.
The conflict between the two seemed kinda ridiculous and contrived. And then having the secret remain between them even though Royal suspects what it is?? That would make anyone crazy!

The epilogue provides a great wrap up to the series, and I'm definitely looking forward to Sayer and Zeb's story in the new spin-off series!
