This is a great historical romance, with no complicated plots as many romances are today. I am getting so tired of the spy and or complicated revenge plots that so many historical romance have. It has an honorable hero, and a heroine who can take care of herself. The dialogue and the secondary love story kept me hitting the next button on my kindle; it has been a long time since I could not put a historical romance down. This book is added to my collection of keepers.

Nearly a Lady Berkley Sensation Alissa Johnson 9780425241813 Books Reviews

Nearly a Lady by Alissa Johnson is a Regency style novel that caters to modern sensitivities. Our heroine has been banished with her governess/companion to a small estate in Scotland with almost no money. She is fourteen at the time and her governess is at most 10 years her senior, yet somehow they manage to survive without servants or generous neighbors. Then the second son of Winnefred's original guardian arrives to set matters straight. Although he is a former naval officer or perhaps because of his time in the Navy, he strongly opposed to being responsible for anyone or anything but he must go to Scotland for when straightening out their dead father’s affairs the brothers discover that their stepmother had taken over her husband’s financial affairs, particularly those of a charitable nature. She had a flair for finance that would gather praise from a mobster; the 80 pound allowance that Winnefred was to receive was turned into 5 pounds with the second wife pocketing the difference, with the alleged help of the employed “man of business”. The pair disappeared a short time after the death of the Marquess. The solution for reimbursing the ladies for their years of poverty starts with a London season for Winnefred, only accepted because Freddie see how badly Lilly yearns for London. The amount of time they are given to prepare is amusingly short and it is obvious that although Winnefred can be bribed/threatened to behave by like a proper debutante, she is nothing of the kind. The traditional happy ending arrives with Lilly and Winnefred safely married, although it is hard to believe. It’s not a very realistic novel or overly romantic, although there are moments that will make you laugh. It’s a light, easy read as long as you don’t try to make yourself believe in the plot. Not a great novel, but a pleasant way to while away an otherwise boring afternoon.
Content four stars; language usage two stars.

Good hero and heroine; secondary romance only minimally developed.

May where it should be might; trod where it should be tread. Nominative pronouns used as objects of prepositions, even in the singular ("of he" anyone?). Disagreement of subject and verb. Painful.
That book is not bad per se but it is so boring... I have tried to like it but maybe I will get back to it when I am done with the more interesting ones.
I liked all the characters. It's a formula story but well written and engaging. It was a nice break between more serious books I was reading.
I pre-ordered this book because I loved Alissa Johnson's Providence Series. Those books were adventurous, they had really great protective heros, strong quirky,well-written characters, and romance that flows naturally and with excitement. Although this book is well-written, the storyline is rather weak. There's not much happening and after a while the hero's internal conflict gets old. The best part of the book is the banter between the two as well as the hero's character which was refreshingly different. I was definitely disappointed that this story did not match up to the standards of her past four novels, but I'll still be ordering the next one in hopes that this was just a fluke. Overall, an ok read.
I loved Freddie (Winnefred), she was such a refreshing change as the non-helpless heroine, and Gideon sounds like/reads like a Hottie McHotterson. Her friend Lily was also adorable in her own mini love story. Gideon and Freddie make a great couple, so well suited to each other. They are my 2nd favorite couple by Alissa Johnson (my favorite are Evie Cole and James McAlistair)
