This was one of the most intensive and mesmerizing books I have ever read! Every page was a surprise. The ending blew me away! Angela Hunt is certainly a wonderful author. I couldn't put this book down, I enjoyed it so much, I would give it more than 5 stars. Don't forget to read the epilogue. Christine Schulz
Angela Hunt is one of my favorite authors, but this is a weird story. I recommend (if you have never read her books before) the Fairlawn series, The Note, The Novelist, Unspoken, The Debt, The Pearl, and The Proposal. My favorite of those are probably The Note and The Pearl.
Quite a story!! It's not what you think. What a group of people and their past lives!! Can't say much and give it all away, but it starts out to be a regular get together of some old college buddies, you get some of the past history of each and then -- they end up on and island and can't seem to find a way off. Then the story gets very interesting. Just read it and see.
I have read a lot of Angela Hunt's christian fiction but found this book a departure from her regular writing. Described as a parable by the author, I found it both intriguing but disturbing at the same time. Those readers who are of the christian faith will find something to contemplate within its pages. The book starts out as a group of old college chums try and honor the memory of a much beloved member by going on a week long junket to build a school on a tropical island - a humanitarian mission, if you will. What results is the story of their experiences after landing on a deserted island. Without giving away too much of the story, the ending provides hope. Not for the people on the "uncharted island" but for the child (next generation) of one of the castaways. An easy read this is not, and it left this reader with much to discuss and contemplate after it was completed. Some will not identify with the "situation" the characters find themselves and will consider it simply a product of the author's too vivid imagination. Others will see it as a warning, which I think, was the author's intent.
I typically love Angela Hunt's work. Though this one was well-written, I just couldn't "like" any of the characters in this one and that detracted from the book for me. The book's concept was interesting, and the characters were not intended to be terribly like-able, but that made this one low on my list. I highly recommend checking out other books by this author. While this one is not bad, it's definitely not my favorite.
This book is surprising. It starts off with a lot of background, but it's important to know. The book was recommended by our local librarian and she has been a good resource. I help lead a ladies Christian book club, but all of our books are not labeled 'Christian'. We try to find books we can have a good discussion on and maybe even apply to our own lives. This one holds several surprises and is a certain discussion stirrer. We recommend it to people who like some twists and turns in their reading.
Having read several other books by Angela Hunt before, I was really looking forward to reading this one. Once I started reading it, I discovered that parts of the beginning were a little slow, while others parts kept me reading without wanting to put the book down. Around the middle of the story, I was pleased with how the story was picking up pace and starting to draw me in more and more; a page turner. Near the end, I found myself a little confused and disappointed with the drop in excitement. After I finished, I was let down. While I know the point the author was trying to make, I felt the end fell through. Not horrible. Not her best.
